Cultural Event #8

I also, today, went to the Farmer's Market. It ended up being a lot of fun, even though I was up long before the crack of noon.

I awoke, sleepy from the previous night of study and finals and quickly dressed myself. I rode my motorcycle where, lo and behold, was a sight like unto that of Swiss Days in Midvale. I walked among the different booths: some were selling wooden toys or walking sticks, others music, still others selling even haircuts! There was food and dancing with lovely background music. I thought to myself, "what a wonderful little community get-together!" It seemed more like a party than a market. I stayed a while to enjoy myself, even though I couldn't buy anything because I had to save my money to buy a ticket to the Thrillionaires later that night so I could write a blog about it for class.

The atmosphere, which was truly the most important part of all this, gets a 10. Very relaxing, yet engaging. The music and dancing get a 10 just because they were there. Unexpected, yet pleasing. Good for you! I didn't get to try any of the food, like I said, but I'm sure it was great. I can't rate it this time, but I will certainly save it for later. I plan to go back with my wife, who is now back from Girls Camp. (Yay!) She's looking to buy some cheap produce... I just wanna play with the toys.

Cultural Event #7

So tonight I went to go see the Thrillionaires at the Covey Center for the Arts-- my theatrical event. The stage was in the center, pushed back against the wall and surrounded by the audience on 3 sides. The whole room was black, as were their costumes. They're an improv group so, after a few suggestions from the audience, they did their thing!

They performed 2 plays, the second was a musical. The first number, "Funky Goons", was a Shakespear parody. There was a young man who ended up in love with his mother-in-law/stepmother, and everyone was killing everyone but then in the end no one was really dead. It was hullarious. The musical was entitled "Corncakes" about a mystical corncake recipe that everyone wanted but that was buried with the woman who made it that turned out to be the mother of two families who eneded up meeting at the beginning. Crazy.

I'm personally glad that I found something like this for my theater entry; it is very much my style. I enjoyed how even when the actors messed up, they would just make a joke of it. In any other theatrical setting it would have ruined the whole moment. The all black was a nice touch. It really let you fill in the costume with your imagination. The cast was a great mix as well, and played off each other very nicely. I give the performance a 10. Truly great work in the tradition of "Whose-line-is-it-anyway?" The Atmosphere also gets a 10. I loved the all black, and the audience was very perticipative and involved. I reccomend it to anyone, and it's every Saturday night, in case you wanted to let your future students know about it, Sister Stokes.

Class for Week 7

Class this week was interesting. Watching the movies was a great break. I have never seen LIFE OF BRIAN and am excited to go finish it on my own. It was neat to get to see all the camera angles and what they're meant to do. I actually talked about how camera angles were used in the film Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog in my final paper.

So, the last week of class, huh? It's bittersweet. I'll miss learning, but having my evenings clear up a LOT isn't that bad either! :) It's been fun, Sister Stokes-- you stay who you are. Good luck with your masters thesis, I know it'll be the bomb. If you ever need something, don't be afraid to hollar. Take care of yourself!

Readings for Week 7

All my reading this week has been of my notes to brush up in preparation for the final. I'm a more than a little nervous about taking it. I guess what I really mean is that I have a serious financial investment with all the cultural events I've attended this semester and I REALLY don't want to have to re-take the class. Oh! In case this needs to be broken down for you Sister Stokes...

Cultural Event #6

After this week, there's only one more: Theatre! Then I will be officially cultured and an obviously better human being.

This week I went to the Pioneer Legacy dance performance at the Covey Center for the Arts. It was a very long day and this wasn't a great way to end it. I discovered tonight that I am not the biggest dance fan.

I've been to ballets before and stomached through it because that's what you do when you want to appear cultured. What a bunch of crap. I guarantee that 90% of the people who go to these things would much rather be at home reading a book. Instead, they get all dressed up and go so they can tell their neighbors how refined they are.

Anyways, a flowing, WAY OVERLY-DRAMATIC narrative guided the dances. "We had a dream... yes... a dream. A dream... of dreams... we were dreaming... about achieving our dreams... in our dreams.... and now a dance." At first, the dancers were poorly costumed and contorting themselves to ill-selected music. Later, they decided to go with the theme of the show and dress as actual pioneers. They attemped to dance on boats, the plains, and in Salt-Lake City. I say attempted because it really reminded me of that modern dance lady we talked about in class who was like, "OoooOoooO! Look! I'm Nature!" as she carelessly tossed her sanity out the window. They even had a whole number devoted to children in their pajamas hugging each other. Needless to say, there were a few too many warm fuzzies for me to breathe in the auditorium. After some air, I went back in to finish the performance.

It did get progressively better, so I think it was worthwhile. There were probably a lot more people there who actually enjoyed it. I personally felt that the dancing could use A LOT of work, but the auditorium was great. Performance gets a... oh alright, a 6. (but just because I'm feeling nice) Atmosphere gets a 10, they keep that place clean. Over all, however, the best part about going was being able to ride my motorcycle there and back.

Class for Week 6

Class this week has been a great improvement over last week. I loved listening to music and watching video clips as opposed to straight lecture.

The end of the semester is so close I can almost taste it... I'll have to work extra hard to maintain focus in class. You have no idea how hard I'm working right now to keep typing. It's depressing, what once would have excited me, a Dada rant, now serves only to bore me as I continue on.

Wow. I'm actually sad about it! Maybe I'll get to rant in my final paper...

Reading for Week 6

We were asked this week to write a blog on some kind of theater. I chose Dada theater.

Pretty standard Dada... the whole point was to get a rise out of people. In the early nineteen hundreds they acutally succeeded in getting the audience to rise up out of their seats, storm the stage, and hunt down the actors. They were delighted at what they had done to the public.

In all truth, the reading was rather dull. Usually it would excite me, but I guess the end of the semester is just too close.
